#Repost @prideinsavannah ・・・ In response to recent news of a transgender student isolated from a school dance because of her gender identity, Lane Cogdill, co-chair of the First City Pride Center Diversity Committee, writes: “As both an educator and an openly transgender person, I am furious with the news of a school in Chatham County mistreating a transgender student due to her gender presentation at a school dance. I admire the student’s courage, because I know how incredibly difficult it is to present as one’s true gender knowing one’s community, even in 2020, still largely rejects transgender individuals. I also commend the mother of this student for setting a powerful example of supportive parenting of a transgender child. The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has a legal and ethical obligation to provide a safe environment for all students, regardless of gender, both during school and at any school event. Isolating a transgender child to punish them for their gender presentation is both unethical and against the law. More importantly, this treatment causes direct harm to any transgender student in this community – research shows that transgender children whose gender identities are not affirmed are at extremely high risk of attempting suicide. It is beyond time for SCCPSS to utilize the many resources available nationally and locally to educate all faculty and staff at all schools on best practices within the field of education regarding supporting transgender and other LGBTQ+ students.” #lgbtq? #transequality #protecttranskids #transisbeautiful #transpride
