The documentary has been described as “the single most destructive hour of anti-gay propaganda in our nation’s history.”? – #Repost @carternewyork ・・・ Repost from @lgbt_history #mikewallace – “Homosexuality is an enigma. Even in this era of bold sexual mores, it remains a subject that people find disturbing, embarrassing, and there’s reluctance to discuss it. Yet there is a growing concern about homosexuals in society, about their increasing visibility. In preparing this broadcast, CBS News commissioned a survey by the Opinion Research Corporation into public attitudes toward homosexuality. We discovered that Americans consider homosexuality more harmful to society than adultery, abortion, or prostitution; we shall present other results of the survey later in the broadcast and we shall investigate some of the medical, legal, and social aspects of homosexuality. . . . . “They frequent their own clubs and bars and coffeehouses where they can act out in the fashion that they want to . . .” – “CBS Special Reports: THE HOMOSEXUALS,” hosted by Mike Wallace, March 7, 1967. c/o @cbsnews. . On March 7, 1967, fifty-three years ago today, CBS News aired “The Homosexuals,” a controversial documentary that was one of the first national television programs to attempt to portray “the plight of the homosexual” in a neutral manner. Despite any efforts at neutrality, however, the documentary has been described as “the single most destructive hour of anti-gay propaganda in our nation’s history.” . Although gay men like Frank Kameny, Jack Nichols, Lars Larson, and Gore Vidal spoke positively on behalf of “the homosexual community” (which apparently meant only the gay male community), prevailing stereotypes were presented as objective fact by host Mike Wallace and anti-homosexual “experts” like Dr. Charles Socarides. . “The average homosexual, if there be such, is promiscuous,” Socarides said. “He is not interested or capable of a lasting relationship like that of a heterosexual marriage. . . .The pick-up, the one night stand, these are characteristics of the homosexual relationship.” #lgbthistory #haveprideinhistory

Joe Dill, a councilman in Greenville County, South Carolina, has introduced a proposed ballot measure that would allow voters to weigh in on an anti-gay resolution originally passed in 1996. The resolution states “that lifestyles advocated by the gay community should not be endorsed by government policy makers, because they are incompatible with the standards to which this community subscribes.”
