Founded in 1973 by Jeanne Manford, a Queens NY school teacher whose gay son was beaten and hospitalized at a political rally in April 1972. Mrs. Manford protested the lack of police response to her son’s attack by marching during the NYC Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade in 1972 with a sign that read, “PARENTS OF GAYS UNITE IN SUPPORT OF OUR CHILDREN.” The following March of 1973, a group of parents met in NYC and PFLAG was created . The organization and its mission grew in size and reach, expanding to the west coast where it’s LA founder, Adele Starr, reached out to “Dear Abby” to explain the purpose of the group. Over 7500 letters of inquiry poured in as a result of a mention in the “Dear Abby” newspaper column of the day… . Further support for the group came from First Lady Barbara Bush in 1990 that firmly stated, “We cannot tolerate any discrimination against individuals or groups in our country” .
