We have learned of a personal Facebook post this week by the Chief of Police for the City of Johns Creek that has many concerned. Attached below is a link to a post by the City of Johns Creek with their response and acknowledgement, including within it a copy of the personal Facebook post originally posted by the Chief of Police. https://bit.ly/2XR2aHC PFLAG Johns Creek’s Board has contacted the City of Johns Creek Mayor and City Council with our concerns and questions. The City of Johns Creek just this year passed a hate crimes ordinance measure which allows enhanced penalties for violations of city ordinances, such as vandalism, that target victims “because of their actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical or mental disability, or national origin”. We have been so proud of the passage of this hate crimes ordinance. PFLAG Johns Creek recognizes that those we call members, family, and friends do not belong to just one of these recognized and protected classes but to many of them. PFLAG Johns Creek advocates for an end to discrimination, injustice, and violence for LGBTQ+ individuals. But now, more than ever, we realize we must also unite with people of color to bring about our Mission of support, education, and advocacy to and for them as well. Additionally, PFLAG National has recently signed onto a joint letter with a growing list of organizations committing our movement to make “explicit commitments to embrace anti-racism and end white supremacy, not as necessary corollaries to our mission, but as integral to the objective of full equality for LGBTQ people.” [From recent PFLAG National communication. https://bit.ly/2Ymkd7h] Know that PFLAG Johns Creek will continue to stay attuned to this situation. Now, more than ever, we show our pride and love for YOU!

“When I think of Marsha P. Johnson, I think of someone who kids today who are gay today know nothing about, which is a shame, really, because she’s one of the reasons they’re sitting in all their liberated glory today,” Michael Lynch of Hot Peaches, their drag performance group, says in the documentary. “Marsha paid the price for who she was.” Remember our beginnings. #PrideMonth

What does #PrideMonth mean to you? This past week we’ve been filled with sorrow, but we also have so much hope because of the powerful actions against injustice and the overwhelming response from our North Atlanta community. This is exactly what pride is all about! We must stand up for what is right, for what we believe in, and for who we are. If you’re looking for a way to directly support others, reach out to us to learn how you can volunteer to lead a support group for teens and adults. #pflag #pflagsandysprings #PrideMonth #PrideMonth2020
