← JOHNS CREEK Location – Support Group Meetings WHEN: Tuesday, July 17 (Third Tuesday of Each Month) 7 – 8:30 PM WHERE: Johns Creek United Methodist Church 11180 Medlock Bridge Road Johns Creek, GA 30097 3rd Floor – Room 322 * Enter the building via the smaller portico entrance on the Bell Road side of the building. Look for the PFLAG signs and/or greeters outside or just inside the building. Take the stairs or elevator to the 3rd floor, room 322. Look for the signs and/or greeters in the 3rd floor hallway. * — PFLAG Johns Creek is here for you! Providing free and confidential support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people, and their parents, families, and friends in the North Atlanta metro area. PFLAG Johns Creek support groups meet on the third Tuesday of each and every month at the JOHNS CREEK location. We know it can be intimidating, if not frightening, at first to share personal, real life struggles with strangers. Please know that you do not have to speak unless and until you feel comfortable. Some people just come and listen to others’ stories. Sometimes part of the process, especially in the beginning, is to just listen to others who have been where you are. This is a safe space! And it’s o.k. to cry. (We have plenty of tissues on hand!) We have two separate groups, each led by PFLAG trained facilitators, and each room has a sign identifying which group is meeting in that room. Choose the group that is best for you: • TEENS – Support/discussion for LGBTQ teens and their teen friends/allies (8th grade and up). • ADULTS – Support/discussion for LGBTQ adults and parents, families, and friends of LGBTQ adults or youth. — Questions? PFLAG JOHNS CREEK invites area LGBTQ teens and their teen friends/allies to our Teen Social Event! WHEN: 1st Saturday of Each Month 7:30 – 10 PM WHERE: Alpharetta Presbyterian Church 180 Academy Street Alpharetta, GA 30009 (Downtown Alpharetta) * Enter through the main entrance. A volunteer will greet you. * — Hang out! Have fun! BE YOURSELF! All in a safe & affirming space. – We’ll play some cool games and do some fun activities! – Wear comfy clothes because we’re going to be active! – Food and drinks provided! 8th grade and up; minimum age = 13. $5 donation per person requested at the door. Adult chaperones will be with the teens at all times. — PARENTS: No curb drop-off! Check-in is required at the door for everyone (teens and adults). Teens must be checked in by a parent/guardian. Parents/Guardians are invited to stay and join the adult group for casual snacks & conversation during the Event. But staying is not required. However, check-in is required. Again, no curb drop-off! — IMPORTANT: Anyone under the age of 18 must sign a Parent/Legal Guardian Permission Form & Waiver & Youth/Teen Acceptance Form at each event check-in. Billy Strayhorn, who was born one hundred and three years ago today, was a jazz composer, pianist, lyricist, and arranger, best known for his decades-long collaboration with bandleader and composer Duke Ellington. . As a teen, Strayhorn dreamed of being a classical composer, though the dream soon met the reality of the deeply-segregated musical world; classical music, in other words, was not open to black composers. At nineteen, Strayhorn’s attention turned to jazz, and it was around this time that he first saw Duke Ellington perform. . In 1938, upon meeting Ellington, Strayhorn showed the bandleader how he would have arranged one of Sir Duke’s pieces; Ellington was so impressed that he set up a meeting between Strayhorn and the full band, marking the start of a partnership that lasted until Strayhorn’s death. The pair’s work together produced some of Ellington’s best-known pieces, including “Take the ‘A’ Train” and “Lush Life.” . Throughout his career, Strayhorn was openly gay, and he had long-term relationships with Aaron Bridgers and Bill Grove. . Join our SPECIAL EDUCATION EVENT: Navigating Transgender Legal Issues GUEST SPEAKER: Taylor Brown Tyron Garner Memorial Fellow LAMBDA LEGAL WHEN: Tuesday, February 19 7 – 8:30 PM WHERE: Johns Creek United Methodist Church 11180 Medlock Bridge Road Johns Creek, GA 30097 (3rd Floor – Dining Hall) Taylor will be discussing ways parents of transgender children can navigate complex legal issues, such as name changes, ID document changes, restroom access, school rights, and healthcare. She will provide us with clear, actionable guidance to ensure our kids and ourselves are safe and secure. PLEASE NOTE: Our regular scheduled meetings will meet as usual during the education event for those who need support or wish not to attend the education event. • TWEENS (Room 313) • TEENS (Rooms 322 and 323) • ADULTS (Rooms 315 and 320) — Taylor Brown is the Tyron Garner Memorial Law Fellow at the Southern Regional Office of Lambda Legal in Atlanta, GA. Taylor pursues litigation, policy advocacy, and public education addressing inequities in policy and the law for African-American LGBTQ people and African-American PLWH. She passed the February 2018 New York Bar Exam and is pending admission in New York. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the National Trans Bar Association. February 19, 2019
